BUILDING THE CAMPAIGN TO STOP CLIMATE CHANGE: 'Climate Emergency Week' debrief

Even though the threat of climate change is well-documented and accepted by the vast

majority of scientists, governments including our own have failed to take the action needed to cut emissions and start the transition to a zero-carbon economy. There is a real contradiction between Garnaut and Labor's 'between 5 and 10% emissions cut by 2020' target and the desire for actual change in the community. It's clear that we need nothing less than a mass movement to avert the climate crisis.

Join activists and campaigners to discuss the next steps in the campaign for real action on climate change and for the Queensland Climate Emergency Network!

Climate change 'sinking Pacific nation'

An immigrant from a tiny Pacific Ocean nation is appealing to the Australian government to assist in evacuations because she says her homeland is sinking under rising sea levels.

Currently bedridden with pneumonia, Kiribati Australia Association member Wanita Limpus in a statement told the Climate Emergency Week rally outside Queensland's Parliament House how climate change was destroying her home nation.

Ms Limpus said since she left Kiribati in 1976 to marry her Australian husband, she had returned to see clear signs of rising sea levels in 1991, 2004 and 2005.

"In 1991 I was having breakfast in my sister's home one morning when there happened to be a king tide and waves crashed over a retaining wall and swept into the house and we found ourselves up to our ankles in sea water in the kitchen," she said.

"I was shocked at this, but my sisters were laughing ... they were used to it.

"In 2004, when I returned I had to move my grandfather's grave from its resting place, and bury him more inland."

Mrs Limpus called on the Australian government to help Kiribati begin the evacuation process, saying the land would become uninhabitable long before it was submerged.

"Salt water is mixing with the groundwater and contaminating wells. Soon vital food providing plants and trees are going to die.

"Our people are inevitably going to have to abandon their land. They will be scattered, families will be split.

"(We need) to prepare the evacuation in a way which is the least traumatic for both them and the countries that will receive them."

"Kiribati, pronounced Kiribas, is a small nation of just over 100,000 people scattered across 33 coral atolls in the Central Pacific Ocean," she said.

"The coral atolls of which Kiribati consists, are flat, just a few hundred metres wide and no more than a metre above sea level."

She said Kiribati was the place of origin of the Hawaiian skirt and was the scene of the Battle of Tarawa, a major World War II battle between the United States and Japan.

Her husband Leonard Limpus said while Kiribati still had a few decades left, things like education had to be altered to make integration easier.

"But you can't put a timetable on it because things seem to be happening a lot faster than they are being forecasted for," he said.

Climate Emergency Week organiser Paul Benedek said the Kiribati people were just one of many being affected by climate change and more needed to be done than "weak" emissions cut talks.

"We have heard those in positions of power calmly talking of giving up on the Great Barrier Reef; we see growing evidence of our major river systems dying and permanent drought; and Arctic ice is near its lowest level on record," Mr Benedek said.

"We are rallying to demand a massive shift to renewable energy, to public transport and to sustainability."

Climate Emergency Launch

Monday, 22nd September, 2008

Queensland Climate Emergency Week launched in spectacular fashion on Monday morning with a sit-in of the Prime Minister's Electoral Office in Brisbane.

A small group, comprised of the PM's Griffith constituents, occupied the office through the morning to highlight the consequences of the Federal government signing onto the interim emmission targets recommended by the Garnaut review. They have requested a meeting with the PM as members of his electorate to discuss emission reduction scenarios after the release of the Garnaut review.

The sit-in recieved national press coverage, and is the first of what will be many MP office occupation across the country over the coming months, staged to highlight the need for 2020 emission targets to stabilise dangerous climate change and to protect Australia's natural heritage assets in perpetuity.

The launch was coupled with a public forum that evening in the CBD with some 50 representatives of social justice, student and environmental organisations for information sharing, cross-fertilisation and importantly to discuss principles, strategies and tactics to build upon the people's movement for climate action in Queensland.

CLIMATE EMERGENCY rally & festival

Sunday Sept 28 - Rally, march & festival
Climate emergency - Renewables NOW!
Rally 2pm, Parliament House (George St, city)
Speakers: Wanita Limpus (Kiribati Australia Association); Steve Posselt (Save the Mary River kayak campaigner); Dr John Mackenzie (Friends of the Earth)
Then join the endangered lungfish, Mary River turtle, polar bears and more on a tour of 'climate criminals' including BHP, Xtrata & Waratah Coal, and march to:
Climate Festival @ Centenary Place (Valley)
Music including Grassroots Street Orchestra, stalls, workshops, food, films from 4pm til late

It's a climate emergency - melting of the Arctic sea ice may be complete by the northern summer of 2010. Ross Garnaut admits his "plan" would likely see the permanent loss of the Great Barrier Reef within decades. Our major river systems are dying and 'permanent drought' is forecast.

We need to radically reduce greenhouse gas emissions - yet in Qld a tripling of the coal industry is planned, along with destructive dams, and further roads and tunnels are being built encouraging cars instead of public transport.

We are calling for:
No new coal mines & phase out existing coal * Invest in renewables - carbon trading is no solution *
Public transport not roads and tunnels * A just transition to green jobs * Sustainable water use.

The week is organised by the Climate Emergency Network Queensland, with support from at least 15 environment, social justice and political groups. For further info or to endorse, contact Paul 0410 629 088; John 0405 433 550 - check out www.enoughhotair.com for supporting organisations

How you can help out:

Kevin Rudd's electorate office stormed in climate change push
Article from: The Courier-Mail

By Robyn Ironside

September 22, 2008 12:00pm

UP to 20 constituents from Kevin Rudd's Griffith electorate have packed his electorate office in Brisbane's Morningside to demand a meeting on climate change.

Led by Bradley Smith, the group plans to occupy Mr Rudd's office until staff agree to convey its concerns about the emissions reduction target to the Prime Minister and arrange a meeting.

Mr Smith said the emissions reduction target of five to ten per cent fell well short of what was needed to save the Great Barrier Reef.

Qld protesters declare climate emergency
September 22, 2008 - 12:10PM

A coalition of environmental activists will target the Queensland government and mining corporations in a series of protests in Brisbane this week.

The actions are planned for the city in what has been declared a Climate Emergency Week by environmental organisations across the country.

Protest organiser Paul Benedek said he believed Australians were prepared to accept higher emission targets to protect and preserve their national heritage - but the federal government's Garnaut report had sacrificed the Great Barrier Reef.

"Having a conscious strategy that sacrifices - for eternity - one of the most unique natural wonders in the world, shows the utter insanity of those currently dictating climate policy," Mr Benedek said.

Activists refuse to leave Rudd's office

Environmental activists have gathered inside the Griffith electorate office of Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, refusing to leave until they are granted a meeting to push for a 40 per cent reduction in greenhouse emissions by 2020.

Seeking to draw attention to the plight of the Great Barrier Reef, 13 Brisbane residents entered the PM's office at 10.45am. They are still inside, despite being told by Mr Rudd's office staff that he was not available.

"The Queensland government is pretending to be leading a smart state while it is putting in billions of dollars in expanding the dirty, greenhouse-emitting coal industry.

"(Professor Ross) Garnaut, the Business Council and most politicians are putting protection of the market ahead of protecting the planet's irreplaceable reefs, rivers, land and air.

"But there is no economy on a dead planet - no business, no profits, no jobs - nothing."

Climate Emergency Week will include a Critical Mass cycle protest on Friday afternoon, and a rally outside Queensland Parliament House on Sunday.

Wanita Limpus from the Kiribati-Australia Association is scheduled to address the rally on the threat of climate change to the country.

Protesters then aim to march past Queensland government buildings and corporations like Xtrata and Waratah Coal.

Next Monday, they plan to target the Coal 08 mining conference in Brisbane.

Meanwhile, constituents of Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's electorate of Griffith, in Brisbane, on Monday staged a sit-in at his Morningside office.

Holding signs, saying: "Rudd: missing in action on climate change," the protesters say the federal government's response to the climate change has been inadequate.

Love Earth Gatherings

Date: Saturday 4th of October

Time: Starts at 11am (10am for Perth and Sydney)

http://www.loveearthgathering.com/

"If all people in Australia could adopt a vegetarian/vegan diet we could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by one third. We want to get the vegetarian/vegan diet on the agenda of anyone seriously concerned about reducing the impact of climate change. And we need your help. The Love Earth Gathering is our opportunity to encourage the world to adopt a vegetarian/vegan lifestyle so we can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and save our planet."

"On Saturday October 4, 2008 we are asking all the vegans and vegetarians of the world to gather together in their city and publicly request the world governments to recognize and promote the vegetarian/vegan diet as a real and viable means to reduce green house gas emissions. So come and join us on October 4 in your city. Wear something bright, funny or just come as your own good looking self, but do come. Make a stand and be counted. Together we can save our world."

This is our chance to make some noise. There's been too much silence on the livestock sector's greenhouse emissions, and the obvious solution of eating less animal products is hardly ever mentioned. We can help bring this very serious issue into the spotlight. The more people we get along, the bigger the impression we can make.

Climate campaigners to Garnaut: Great Barrier Reef more valuable than business bottom line

BRISBANE, FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

A week of protest actions are planned for Brisbane in what has been declared a national a "Climate Emergency Week" by environmental organisations around the country. The state of emergency has been declared by climate campaigners, following Ross Garnaut's latest report that recommends a national climate strategy which is, by his own admission, "expected to lead to the destruction of the Great Barrier Reef."

"Having a conscious strategy that sacrifices - for eternity - one of the most unique natural wonders in the world, shows the utter insanity of those currently dictating climate policy," said Paul Benedek, an organiser of the September 22-29 Climate Emergency Week.

"At least Garnaut is honest," Benedek continued. "The Queensland government is pretending to be leading a 'smart state' while it is putting in billions of dollars in expanding the dirty, greenhouse-emitting coal industry."

"Garnaut, the Business Council and most politicians are putting protection of the market ahead of protecting the planet's irreplaceable reefs, rivers, land and air. But there is no economy on a dead planet - no business, no profits, no jobs - nothing."

Fellow organiser John Mackenzie from enoughhotair.com explained that "We have a small window of opportunity between now and when Garnaut's recommendations become our national policy and international negotiating position. The Climate Emergency Week is being organised precisely to send a clear message to governments across the country that Australians are prepared to accept higher emission targets to protect and preserve our national heritage. There is too much at stake to prioritise economic expediency over our future."

The week of action in Brisbane - which features a launch forum on September 22, actions on campuses mid-week, a 'Critical Mass' cycle protest on September 26 - culminates on Sunday September 28.

On the 28th, those wanting emergency climate action will rally at 2pm at Parliament House to hear Wanita Limpus from the Kiribati-Australia Association explain how climate change is literally engulfing her country. After the speakers, a "climate criminals tour" will target the Queensland Government along with mass emissions-producing corporations like Xtrata and Waratah Coal, before proceeding to a 4pm Climate Festival at Centenary Place featuring music, food, workshops and films going until late.

The final event of the week will be a protest at the "Coal 08" conference on the morning of Monday September 29 at the Marriott hotel.

We really hope you can support the week, and please email us as soon as possible so we can add you to our poster and website.

We need urgent action on climate change!

Get involved in the Brisbane's actions as part of the national week of protest action beginning September 21. Support the Actions now.

Just fill in the from below.

Climate change is occurring faster than the world's scientists have predicted. Recent data including the very real possibility of the arctic sea-ice melting by September this year demonstrate that this is a climate emergency.

The Federal Government's proposed Emissions Trading Scheme allows handouts to the biggest polluters and - by the government's own admission - will allow emissions to continue rising for some years .

At the state level, Queensland is the biggest coal exporting state, within the biggest coal exporting country in the world . The Queensland Government is encouraging the tripling of coal production by 2030, including building Australia's largest coal port at pristine Shoalwater Bay.

This is all utterly unsustainable. We need urgent action on climate change on many fronts, including:
  • No new coal;
  • Massive public spending on renewable energy;
  • More public transport not roads and tunnels

A national week of protests is being organised across Australia at the Spring Equinox, in the week beginning September 21.

We ask climate change campaign groups and networks and all environmentally concerned organisations across South-East Queensland to join us for a meeting to organise a co-ordinated and effective week of public protest around these themes.
