Then join the endangered lungfish, Mary River turtle, polar bears and more on a tour of 'climate criminals' including BHP, Xtrata & Waratah Coal, and march to:
Climate Festival @ Centenary Place (Valley)
Music including Grassroots Street Orchestra, stalls, workshops, food, films from 4pm til late
It's a climate emergency - melting of the Arctic sea ice may be complete by the northern summer of 2010. Ross Garnaut admits his "plan" would likely see the permanent loss of the Great Barrier Reef within decades. Our major river systems are dying and 'permanent drought' is forecast.
We need to radically reduce greenhouse gas emissions - yet in Qld a tripling of the coal industry is planned, along with destructive dams, and further roads and tunnels are being built encouraging cars instead of public transport.
We are calling for:
No new coal mines & phase out existing coal * Invest in renewables - carbon trading is no solution *
Public transport not roads and tunnels * A just transition to green jobs * Sustainable water use.
The week is organised by the Climate Emergency Network Queensland, with support from at least 15 environment, social justice and political groups. For further info or to endorse, contact Paul 0410 629 088; John 0405 433 550 - check out www.enoughhotair.com for supporting organisations
